Book Marketing
Book marketing is not one of the easiest things on the planet. Indeed, it can be one of the hardest things in a market where there are hundreds of books coming out nearly every month that are all competing with each other. As if the books competing with one another were not bad enough, they are also competing with the other forms of entertainment that has forced reading to take a bit of a back seat in the consumer’s mind of what is worthwhile. Marketing books requires a sound knowledge of the market and some good design to be successful and it is not as hard as it seems.
What is the first thing that customers see when they pick up a book? If you answered the cover then you are on the right track. Most people look at the cover of a book to decide whether or not they are going to bother picking it up to see what the book is about. If the cover does not stand out amongst the shelves then your book is as good as dead. This does not always count, however. Some books, like the classics, do not need to have a cover that jumps out at the reader. These books will always sell since there will always be someone around that wants to buy some play by Shakespeare or read the collected poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Book marketing as far as the covers go is related more to the new books that are coming out by authors who have yet to make a name.
Take a look at the typical shelf and you will see the problem. Established authors have their names emblazoned on the cover larger than the title. That is what attracts the reader’s attention. When it comes to newer books, however, the author’s name is not going to sell the book. It is only the cover design and title that are going to help get that book off of the shelf and into the person’s hands. Added to this problem is the fact that there are lots of books trying to attract attention at the same time. They are all trying to get off of the shelf and into the reader’s hands. Book marketing is not an easy task but with good designers and creative people, it is not impossible either.
Good cover design that jumps out at the reader is an important aspect of book marketing. There are lots of books out there that are all trying to get read. Not only are there too many books that are trying to be sold but there is also the added problem of the other competition. Video games, DVD’s, and other electronic entertainments are serious competitors for the consumer’s hard-earned money that makes effective book marketing even more important than ever. While it is a hard market out there, it is not an impossible one. With good marketing, good design and such any book can make its way off of the shelf.
